Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has been sharing his thoughts on the possibility of former President Donald Trump deciding to sign the Republican National Committee’s (RNC) debate pledge just before the first Republican presidential debate. Christie, who is also running for president in the 2024 election, mentioned on ABC’s “This Week” that Trump is known for using misdirection and could surprise everyone by signing the pledge and participating in the debate at the last minute.
In June, the RNC laid out certain requirements for Republican candidates to meet in order to take part in primary debates. These requirements included achieving at least 1% support in three national polls, gathering 40,000 unique donors for their campaign committee, and agreeing to support the eventual Republican presidential nominee by signing a pledge.
The first Republican primary debate, moderated by Fox News’ Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, is scheduled for August 23 in Milwaukee. Trump has indicated hesitancy about taking part in the discussion. Despite being the frontrunner in various polls, he hinted at skipping the event with a post on his Truth Social account last month: “Let them debate so I can see who I might consider for Vice President!”
Christie explained that Trump enjoys keeping the spotlight on himself, and if he were to agree to the debate at the last minute, it would definitely make headlines. While it’s uncertain whether Trump will ultimately sign the pledge, Christie emphasized that this behavior aligns with Trump’s penchant for seeking attention.
Notably, Trump has previously refused to sign the GOP loyalty pledge, causing doubts about his eligibility to participate in the 2024 White House race alongside fellow Republicans. Christie speculated that the RNC might enforce the pledge and prevent Trump from joining the debate stage if he doesn’t sign. He noted that Trump had followed a similar pattern in 2016, hesitating to sign the pledge until the very end. Christie described this situation as a bit of nonsensical drama, highlighting the theatrical nature of the situation.
Christie had criticized the pledge in the past, deeming it “just a useless idea.”
